The Great Pie Adventure Part III: Mom’s Pies

Have you ever stopped at a diner in rural Oregon. The kind with endearingly mismatched chairs, a small staff and good home-style cooking? It’s the kind of thing you occasionally crave, maybe it reminds you of dinner at grandmas house. That’s exactly what Mom’s Pies on Willamette Street in Eugene is. A small menu offers sandwiches similar to those you’d make at home, homemade soup and coffee.

Also, there’s pie. I know, I know, you wouldn’t have guessed. What’s magical is that at any given time there are about three choices for single slices of pie. Sometimes, later in the afternoon it dwindles down to apple-raspberry and apple. The slices, which vary from peach to strawberry rhubarb are freshly baked each day. They’re still warm from the oven when they arrive on your paper plate with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream. The best part? They’re one of the cheapest places to get pie in town. $2.99 for a slice of pie, $3.99 with ice cream? Wonderful! The slices are large. The berries, though previously frozen are local. The crust is thin and has just the right amount of give. Two qualms: the crust is made with Crisco (some people are fans. I myself prefer butter) and the filling is a tad too sweet.

NOT a “to-go” pie.

Just kidding, I have one more grievance. Putting a piece of pie in a paper bowl without a lid of any sort DOES NOT count as making it “to-go.” No really, do you know what happens? Eugenians like me try to ride our bikes home with an open bowl of pie in one hand and all we can do is look at the pie and think ” Then, we try and stick our faces in the bowl to eat the pie without a spoon while riding our bikes . . . Or, if we so choose to just stare at the pie we spend the whole way home worrying that if we go over a bump, the pie will plop out of the bowl onto the sidewalk.

Regardless, the pie is wonderful. Flavorful. Affordable. Local. Just right.

Bonus points: the moment you walk in, the owner hands you a free sample of pie. Don’t forget kids, the most important rule of college is: never turn down free food. Also, they have cheap coffee. And if you feel so inclined, you can even pick up a frozen pie to take home and make yourself (I know, I know, it was a silly suggestion. That requires too much effort)

Uuuuum, “rural Oregon?” Madras, or Wamic, or John Day, or Colton, or Amity, Fossil, Tygh Valley, Christmas Valley, Veneta, Jewel, Scotts Mills and dozens and dozens of others are rural, but Eugene is like the second or third largest city. Lovely and a wonderful place small but too many art galleries to be called rural. But the pie sounds amazing and made my mouth water just thinking about it. 😀

      • Oh, now I get it and I know exactly what you mean. Even in the poshest city you can have an old country store or diner that looks so out of place and out of character where it’s sitting, but if they have survived it is because the food is awesome. 😀

      • Naaah! Rural means more “bucolic.” You need to visit the “rural” area, for instance, where Mom’s Pies used to be up near Nimrod.

    • Oh yes, I love pie. Oregon is bursting full of berries in summer. I just made it to my very favorite pie place, Beckie’s, next to Crater Lake and I can’t wait to tell every one about it!
